When 2018 came around, I had been in permanent employment since I was legally able. I had grown tired of "using up my life" earning money for someone else, and began to wonder what it would be like to be my own boss, and earn the money for myself. Being in the software industry, my eyes were caught by the contractor market. The idea of being able to work for myself, choose my own hours and pick the clients I created software for immediately appealed to me.
I decided to hand in my notice at the company I had worked at for the past 8 years and went in search of pastures new.
At the time, my twin boys weren't even 1 year old yet, so it was without a doubt a nerve-wracking time. Coupled with IR35 having just come into the public sector and I frequently asked myself whether I was doing the right thing. It was a huge shift for me and my family. I honestly am incredibly grateful that 2020 were able to explain to me the ins and outs of what it means to trade through a limited company, and exactly how IR35 would affect me if the time came.
In my new career path, I have a healthier work/life balance, I work when I want and I know that at the end of the month I'll be kept in the loop about what exactly I need to pay and when, how much I am in profit and what my total expenditure is. I've now just ticked over 3 years in self employment and I've not looked back once.
